In a city whose motto is "Art is the handmaid of human good" the Arts League of Lowell has become the catalyst for the creation of a community of all artists. Through ALL, longtime residents and Lowell's new cultural immigrants can come together to share ideas and resources, and to promote each others' work.

Since opening day, Western Avenue Studios has become an integral part of the cultural life of the city of Lowell. In addition to participating in the annual citywide Lowell Open Studios and holding monthly First Saturday Open Studios, WAS has provided venues for the 7th Annual International Edible Book Festival, the Lowell Quilt Festival, and the Lowell Photography Weekend. The summer of 2006 marked the inception of the Summer Art Program for Children. The Western Avenue Studios Artist Association represents many of the artists at Western Avenue Studios. The organization provides outreach and develops partnerships with other cultural institutions in the city.

The Whistler House Museum of Art, birthplace of artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, was established in 1908 as the permanent home of the Lowell Art Association. Founded in 1878, the Lowell Art Association owns and operates the museum as an historic site. Built in 1823, the Whistler House represents the richness of the history and the art of Lowell. The museum maintains its permanent collection and organizes contemporary and historical fine arts exhibitions. It also sponsors a variety of educational and community oriented cultural programs.

The Brush Art Gallery is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 by the Lowell Historic Preservation Commission, U.S. Department of the Interior. Modeled after the Torpedo factory art complex in Alexandria, Virginia, their mission is to nurture the working artist; keep the visual arts alive and healthy in the heart of Lowell's historic district; demonstrate through exhibitions and cultural programming the diverse and rich heritage that exists in Lowell; and make Lowell a destination for viewing some of the finest art being produced in New England and beyond.
