How many urban landscapes offer whitewater rafting and a Smithsonian affiliate museum, (actually 2!) right in their downtown?
Lowell’s Canalway Cultural District offers both!
Lowell National Historical Park, Whistler House Museum of Art, Angkor Dance Troupe, and Merrimack Repertory Theatre are just a few examples of the city’s flourishing creative community.
With seven large-scale festivals, a wide variety of performance spaces, hundreds of concerts per year, innovative creative spaces for making and exhibiting artwork like The Arts League of Lowell, Brush Art Gallery and Studios and Gallery 119 and more than nine countries of cuisine in three city blocks, Lowell is the premier entertainment city of the Merrimack Valley.
The Canalway Cultural District of Lowell is one one of only 17 Cultural Districts in the Commonwealth, all of which were designated through the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Cultural Districts Initiative. The statute that created Cultural Districts was passed by the Massachusetts legislature in 2010 and was designed to highlight the rich creative resources available in Massachusetts, as well as to encourage economic and cultural development at a grassroots level.
Whether you spend a day, or a week; take a canal boat tour, catch a show or eat a great meal; we hope you'll enjoy your visit to Lowell's Canalway Cultural District. And if, like so many others, you decide to make Lowell your home, we're happy to tell you how you can live, work and play in this alive, unique and inspiring city.
