A little about you: My paintings are inspired by the beauty and complexity of landscape forms both real and imagined. I use the subject of landscape to explore the edge between abstraction and representation with an emphasis on the expressive use of color. I believe color is the soul of a painting, often reflecting the tension between what is known and what is felt. Like the Abstract Expressionists, I am inspired by the act of painting itself and by the sensual articulation of color and form. I prefer acrylics and collage because of their potential for flat shapes and washes of color. When painting, I weave thin outlines around graphic shapes in a gestural bravado, drawing from a palette of uninhibited colors. In the end, my paintings are a symphonic consonance of lustrous hues and expressive forms; a harmony of abstract marks and recognizable imagery. I paint in my studio as well as in the field, the scale of my work ranging from small studies to much larger canvases. The Fauves, as well as the Abstract Expressionists, have played important roles in the development of my style. Favorite artists include a range from Henri Matisse and William Henry Johnson to Fairfield Porter and Alice Neel.
What do you create?: acrylics on canvas, collage on wood. Mainly I create cityscapes and landscapes. I always pay close attention to architectural details.
What inspires you?: I look out every window of every building I go into! The views compose themselves and it gives me a higher vantage point.
What is your creative process?: I sketch in colored pencils on watercolor paper. Then I color with watecolors and transfer the image onto canvas. From there I do an acrylic painting of the scene.
Do you sell your art? if so, where can it be purchased?: Yes. It can be purchased by browsing through my website or go to Lowell open studios! My site is at the Ayer Lofts Gallery and lobby, I have four pieces at the Mambo Grille during Artwalk Lowell and I am in a show at the 119 Gallery in Lowell this month called MASK.
